Who doesn’t enjoy chocolate cake? It’s no secret that kids love to indulge in a slice of deliciously sweet dessert, and chocolate cake in particular doesn’t last long in a family home! But while enjoying a piece of cake is undoubtedly a pretty fun thing to do, there’s more to baking than just enjoying the finished product – with easy cake recipes like the one we’re sharing with you today, it can also be a fun activity you and your kids can do together.
Simple cake recipes for kids are not only a great way of spending some quality time with your kids in the kitchen, but also a wonderful opportunity to combine their love of messy fun with passing on a few valuable cooking skills. And what could be more suitable for learning to bake than a simple – and delicious – chocolate recipe for kids?
This recipe is quick and easy; apart from bits and pieces of chocolate ending up in unexpected places (in your mouth, for example) everything should go smoothly!
Chocolate cake recipes for kids: Ingredients
The ingredients for this kids’ cake recipe are simple. You will most likely have most of them at home already, but if not, take your kids for a trip to the supermarket and let them pick out the necessary ingredients.
You will need:
- 150g of self-raising flour,
- 50g of cocoa
- 200g of caster sugar – you can use brown sugar for a (slightly) healthier alternative to white sugar.
- 80g butter,
- 125ml of milk
- and 2 eggs at the ready.
For a quick chocolate icing:
- 250g 75-80% dark chocolate
- 1 tablespoon of dark muscovado sugar
- 1 generous tablespoon of golden syrup
- 125g unsalted butter

How to make chocolate cake: an easy cake recipe for kids
- Preheat the oven to approximately 180 degrees – this is also a good opportunity to teach your kids how the oven works, and make sure they know how to handle it safely. Remember that it’s essential when cooking with kids that they are supervised at all times to prevent accidents, and that you remain in charge of any cooking tasks that involve the oven or sharp objects.
- Grease a cake tin with butter, or let your kids do the job – this can get a bit messy, but sometimes, getting messy is half the fun!
- Mix all the ingredients in a bowl. While you can use a mixer or blender, it’s more fun to teach your kids how to do it manually – they will certainly enjoy combining all the ingredients and watching them form a delicious mixture. The Solve Your Stain section of this site is here to help,
- Pour the mixture into a cake tin and place it in the oven. Your cake should be ready to eat after about 40 minutes – keep an eye on it, and check if it’s done by inserting a toothpick or skewer into the cake. If it comes out clean, it’s ready.
- Let the cake cool before you start to decorate it. You could use a tub of ready-to-use icing, or you can make your own chocolate glaze. With your little ones standing well back, you can melt the butter, syrup and sugar in a pan before slowly adding the chopped up chocolate, stirring until it all melts together. Pour onto the cake warm, but not hot.
- Decorate! Kids love this part – add chocolate buttons, chips, silver icing balls, anything they can think of! For a slightly healthier option, dab splodges of icing or glaze on to the cake and use it to fix on fruit as decoration.
- Enjoy (sparingly)! Cake is delicious, but it’s best eaten as part of a balanced diet.
